This is a program designed to encourage students to walk/run our track for at least 15 minutes a day in an effort to promote a healthy level of good, personal fitness. The Healthy Active Children Mandate passed by North Carolina requires 30 minutes of vigorous physical activity for elementary children each day. Regular, daily, physical activity promotes both a healthy body and a healthy mind. Many studies have shown the benefits of such activities to people of all ages; students, in particular, can concentrate on class subjects easier, sit more attentively in class, have higher self-esteem, and work better with other students.
Teachers take at least 15 minutes of their day, when they are on the track or bus parking lot, to participate in this program. Remember everyone has their own level of fitness, and as such, all the students in the same class will not start at the same point. But, they all need positive encouragement. Students are encouraged to work to the best of their ability and are reminded they will improve. As they work, their hearts will become stronger, they will move faster, and their personal level of fitness will improve. If our long-range goal is to have a healthier America, we must begin with the children of today.
Ms Skriloff keeps a running tally of each student’s laps and the class total. As students reach various levels, their names are posted in the hall as members of the 100-Mile Club. We recognize students as they reach every 25-mile level. Teachers really try to make every effort for their classes to spend 15 or more minutes of their outside time on the track.
